JOIN

The Klipfolio JOIN function takes a set of values and joins these values with a comma and returns them as a single value.

The syntax for the JOIN function is:

JOIN ( data , glue )

Parameters

data The values to join vector
glue Optional: Default value is comma.  scalar

How to use the JOIN function

The JOIN function takes a set of values and joins those values with a comma and returns them as a single value. For example, if you used the JOIN function on column D:D, then the values will be joined together and displayed in a single cell (D1, D2, D3…). The JOIN function lets you assign data to be joined and, optionally, what value to use to join the values using the glue parameter. By default, the glue is a comma. The JOIN function is commonly used to create comma separated lists for use in a spark line, spark bar, or win/loss charts, and bullet charts.

To use the JOIN function

Note: These procedures assume you are in the Klip Editor as a result of building a Klip or editing a Klip

  1. Select a component from the Component Tree (Column, Primary Value, etc).
  2. Click the Start Formula link in the formula editor.
  3. Click the Insert Function button on the formula editing toolbar.
  4. Select Text>JOIN from the Function's menu.

  1. Click the data link in the JOIN function.
  2. Select a range of values to join together.
  3. Optional: Select a value to use as the glue or use the free text option to create a value to use.


Examples of the JOIN function

The JOIN function is useful because it allows you to quickly join together a range values into a comma separated list. The JOIN function is ideal for preparing data for use in a mini chart. The following examples show different ways you can use the JOIN function.

Using the JOIN function to create a spark line, spark bar, or win/loss chart

The JOIN function can be used to format a range of values as a comma separated list so you can create a spark line, spark bar, or win/loss chart. To insert a single chart into a Table Klip, simply insert the JOIN function, select the range of values, and change the data format to mini chart. If you want to insert multiple charts into a Table Klip, you will need to use an ARRAY function with the JOIN function to create a series of comma separated values. 


Using the JOIN function to create a bullet chart where the data is preformatted

The bullet chart format works differently than other mini chart formats, as it needs 3 specific values assigned in the following order to work: the target value, actual value, and comparative value. If the data source is already formatted with 3 columns in that order, then you can use a JOIN function to create a single bullet chart. If you want to create multiple bullet charts in your Table Klip, use the ARRAY and JOIN function together.


Using the JOIN and ARRAY functions to create a bullet chart

The bullet chart format works differently than other mini chart formats, as it needs 3 specific values assigned in the following order to work: the target value, actual value, and comparative value. If the data source you are working with is not formatted to easily assign each of the values, then you can use an ARRAY and JOIN function to input values to use in the bullet chart. If you want to create multiple bullet charts using this method, wrap the entire equation in an ARRAY.
